The history of our garden
In 1820, Josef Schreiner, then brewer at Stiegl, purchased the house at Festungsgasse No. 206. He redesigned the cellars dug into the Festungsberg hill and used the garden above them to serve cellar beer during the summer months. This marked the birth of the Stiegl cellar in its precursor form, as it appears to us today.
Soon, the restaurant and gardens became very popular with the people of Salzburg. Even today, you can still see the old sales premises on Festungsgasse, whose entrance doors are lined with low stone walls with marble slabs. All kinds of meat, sausage, and bread were probably sold here, which people then took “a few floors higher” where the beer was served. Old nameplates reveal who last sold there.
